How to Prevent Kitchen Fires

Are you aware that more home fires occur in the kitchen compared to any other room in the house?  Cooking is the number one cause of home fires.  Take the below steps outlined by the American Red Cross to ensure you and your family remain safe while making those yummy family favorites!

  1. Do not ever leave the food you are cooking unattended.
  2. Keep your eyes on what you are cooking and your children.  Check the food regularly and be sure to keep the children away from the cooking area.
  3. Turn the handles of your pots and pans toward the back of the stove to prevent people from bumping into them or pulling them down.
  4. Avoid wearing loose clothing while cooking.
  5. Use a timer.
  6. Keep all items that could catch fire away from the stoves, ovens and other heat-producing appliances.
  7. Clean all cooking surfaces on a regular basis.
  8. Verify all stoves, ovens and appliances are turned off before you go to bed and/or leave the house.
  9. Keep a fire extinguisher in your kitchen.
  10. Install smoke detectors throughout your house, including near the kitchen, test them at least once a month, and ensure the batteries are replaced as necessary.
