10 Carbon Monoxide Safety Steps
Did you know that the “invisible killer,” carbon monoxide, unintentionally causes more than 400 American deaths every year? This invisible, odorless, and colorless gas is created when fuels do not completely burn, and it often goes undetected. Your heating and cooking equipment as well as vehicles and generators that are left running in an attached garage are prime sources of carbon monoxide. It is important to remember that a person can be poisoned by both a small amount of carbon monoxide over a longer period and a large amount of carbon monoxide over a shorter amount of time.
We urge you to follow the below steps to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Ensure carbon monoxide detectors with qualified testing laboratory labels are installed in a central location on every level of the home, outside of every sleeping area
- Do your research so that you are aware of who to call should one of your carbon monoxide alarms sound
- Test your alarms at least once per month. Be sure to replace the detectors per the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Never allow your car to idle in your garage
- Confirm your gas appliances are properly vented
- Refrain from using portable flameless chemical heaters and generators inside your home
- Do not use a gas range or oven to heat your home
- Have a qualified technician service your heating system every year
- Get your chimney checked and cleaned each year
- If your carbon monoxide detector sounds, it is pivotal you immediately move to an outdoor location with fresh air or by an open window or door and call for help.
