10 Pet Fire Safety Tips
Did you know that pets and wild animals play a role in starting nearly 1,000 home fires every year? We all love our pets unconditionally, but it is important to remember that they are very curious, which could lead to a fire. We, therefore, recommend adhering to the safety tips listed below.
- Be sure to secure young pet(s) by keeping them in crates/cages or behind baby gates in a secure area of your home.
- Keep your pet(s) away from stoves, countertops, candles, lamps, and space heaters.
- Remove or cover stove knobs prior to leaving your home.
- Never leave your pet(s) unattended near an open flame and always extinguish any open flames prior to leaving your home.
- Consider purchasing flameless candles.
- Fireplace screens, preferably metal or heat-tempered glass, should remain in place.
- Embrace a three-foot “pet-free zone” around any fireplace.
- Ensure your pet(s) do not play near the chimney’s outside vents.
- Keep an eye on your pet(s) to prevent he or she from chewing through electrical cords.
- Ensure you include your pet(s) in your family’s evacuation plan.
