Candle Fire Safety
Did you know that nearly 10,000 residential fires are caused each year by the careless or inappropriate use of candles? This alarming statistic was reported by the National Candle Association (“NCA”).
We understand that candles smell and look appealing and foster a calming and peaceful environment, but they must be used safely. Because of their fire hazards, we recommend the following safety tips when burning candles.

- Candles should never be burned in homes with inhabitants who use oxygen for medical purposes.
- Before burning a candle, you should trim the wick to ¼ inch; the wick should be trimmed before each use.
- A candle should always be burned within sight. Therefore, you should extinguish candles when leaving a room and before going to sleep.
- You should never extinguish a candle with water as the water could cause the hot wax to splatter; a snuffer is the safer option.
- If you choose to use a candleholder, be sure that it is sturdy, heat resistance, and capable of securing any drips or melted wax.
- It is important to place the burning candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
- Candles should not be burned near flammable objects, including but not limited to drapery, bedding, furniture, and paper products. A 12-inch radius around the candle is preferred.
- Any candles you are burning should be kept out of reach of both children and pets.
- Candles should also be placed away from drafts, vents, ceiling fans, and air currents.
- You should not burn too many candles in a small or tight space as air exchange will be limited if you do so.
- If you are burning multiple candles simultaneously, be sure to place the candles at a minimum distance of three inches from each other., and paper products. A 12-inch radius around the candle is preferred.
- If the flame of a candle becomes too high or the candle continually flickers and/or smokes, you should extinguish it as these are signs that the candle is burning improperly.
- It is crucial you remember that a candle ought not to be burned all the way down.
- Candles should only be moved after they are extinguished and when the wax returns to solid matter.
- If there is a power outage, we suggest using flashlights or other battery-operated light sources instead of candles.
