Indoor Fireplace Safety
Not too many things compare to curling up in front of a cozy fire within your home during the fall months.
While the warmth, smell, crackle, and glow of a wood fire can create a pleasant and peaceful environment, they can also lead to a dangerous and destructive situation if the fireplace is not used safely. We, therefore, recommend the following safety tips.
- Retain a qualified professional chimney service technician to inspect and clean, if necessary, your chimney on an annual basis.
- Be certain any flammable items, including but not limited to furniture, blankets, drapery, and magazines or books, are kept at least 3 feet away from the hearth.
- Burn dry or well-aged wood.
- Avoid burning treated wood in your fireplace.
- Place firewood or logs towards the rear of the fireplace on a supporting grate, and implement a top-down approach.
- Before starting a new fire, be sure to clean out the ashes from the previous fire.
- Ensure the damper or flue is open prior to igniting the fire.
- Use a screen in front of the fireplace to prevent flying sparks from igniting or burning holes in your carpet or flooring.
- Ensure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are installed throughout the house and test them monthly.
- Never leave the fire unattended.
